    Why filter tap water?

    The journey of drinking water from the water plant to the tap can take up to several days, which can cause many contaminants to adhere to the water.

    The water treatment plant guarantees the quality of the domestic water supplied up to the connection point of the property. The condition of the property's own water pipes and the habits of the users can affect the quality of the water coming from the tap.

    Soluble substances in the pipes can change the taste, colour or smell of the water. For example, iron and copper can be dissolved in water from old pipelines and stain sanitary ware.

    Water has medicinal substance and hormone residues 

    There is a wide range of medicinal substances and hormones in water, and they can travel into households’ domestic water.

    Most of the water treatment plants date back to a time when the medicine and hormone residues in wastewater and the need to filter them were not yet talked about, so they are not designed to clean up this type of contaminants.

    The effects of all these types of compounds in the environment are not yet fully known, but their high activity can have unpredictable consequences even at low concentrations. Artificial hormones and medicines are designed to cause effects even in very small amounts. The presence of antibiotics in the environment can lead to the formation and proliferation of bacterial strains that are resistant to them.

    No more greenish hair

    Chlorine, metals, and iron that move into the water from the pipes can discolour light-coloured and bleached hair, making them a greenish colour. Filtering metals and chlorine can help preserve the tone of hair dye for longer.

    Water also affects the condition of hair

    Limescale and chlorine make hair coarse and dry, and metals make particularly light-coloured hair brittle. When impurities that damage hair are filtered out of the water, hair condition remains better and is easier to handle.

    Microplastics as a nuisance

    Microplastics are the plague of our waterways. Most of the water treatment plants date back to a time when microplastics were not known. They are transported through water pipes to households.

    Plastics are chemically active substances, which means, for example, that a plastic can absorb harmful substances from the environment. Aquatic organisms eat microplastics, which can thus end up on human plates and drinking glasses with their contaminants. Attention to the existence of microplastics has only begun in recent years, and there is still no conclusive evidence of the health risks they pose.

    WWF has reported that up to five grams of microplastics end up in the body a week which is equivalent to one debit card. The largest single source of microplastic is drinking water. Furthermore, studies have found microplastics in the internal organs of animals and humans.

    Plastic particles smaller than a millimeter are classified as microplastics. As a smallest, they can be less than one micrometer in size, making them visible only under a microscope.

    A microscopical plastic shredder is used for example in cosmetics and detergents. In addition, microplastic is formed by the elapse of plastic materials. Plastic waste spreads into waterways, for example as a result of littering, through air and with wastewater.

    Chlorine dries the skin

    Chlorine is added to municipal water to make the water hygienic. However, chlorine dries the skin. Particularly individuals with atopic skin suffer from chlorine. By filtering the chlorine out of the water, many people with dry skin have found a remedy to their skin problems.

    Bacteria fester in pipes

    Although domestic water is cleaned and disinfected at water treatment plants, the water pipes always have microbes, such as yeasts, moulds, and bacteria, which can weaken the water quality. 

    The natural material and microbes in the water quickly form a biofilm on the inner surfaces of the pipes. Biofilm is the common name for mucus that accumulates on the inner surfaces of all pipes. It is a thin layer of mucus that also acts as a refuge for yeasts, molds and various other microbial strains, as well as bacteria.

    Although the water fed to the pipelines is disinfected with chlorine, microbes can always be released from the biofilm layer from time to time, for example due to variations in water pressure or flow.

    As a result, the general hygienic quality of water can sometimes be very poor, especially in old buildings or in areas with irregular water use.

    Chlorine irritates the eyes and respiratory system

    Chlorine irritates the eyes and, over time, inhaling it in small amounts can have a negative impact on the human respiratory system. This can result in, e.g., coughs and chest pain.
